Disney Reveals First Look At Live Action 'Mulan' Adaptation

This is so exciting. Disney gave fans their first look at the live-action adaptation of Mulan. "Production has begun on Disney's live-action Mulan," the company shared on Twitter. "The film will open in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020." In addition to revealing the highly anticipated film's release date, a photo of actress Liu Yifei in costume as the titular character was also shared. Yifei looks amazing as Mulan, doesn't she?

There's been some controversy surrounding the live-action adaptation of the beloved 1998 animated classic. Namely, fans were pretty mad when it was announced that Mulan's love interest from the cartoon, Li Shang, had been cut from the new version. Many fans viewed Li Shang as a bi-sexual icon and were disappointed that Disney erased him from the live-action version. He also has one of the greatest musical numbers in Disney history. Yes, we're talking about "I'll Make A Man Out Of You." It really does get better every time you listen to it.

Another rumored change is that the live-action Mulan will not be a musical. Disney's president of production, Sean Bailey, said it's "not currently intended to be" a musical, however, "nothing is off the table." Meanwhile the film's director, Niki Caro, said the film will "incorporate" music, according to IGN, though she did not provide any specifics.

Though Mulan is proceeding without Li Shang and possibly without musical numbers, the remake will mostly stick to the original film's plot. The updated take on the movie is described as, "the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever."

Yifei will be joined by a number of talented and well known actors, including Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao and Cheng Pei-Pei. No photos of the other characters have been released yet.

Who's planning on getting down to business and checking out the live-action adaptation of Mulan on March 27, 2020?
