Prince Harry Left Royal Life Because It Was 'Destroying' His Mental Health

Prince Harry made a surprise appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday (February 25). While riding around Los Angeles on a tourist sightseeing bus, the pair discussed the Duke of Sussex's real reason for stepping back from his royal duties.

Much has been reported about Harry's decision to leave London with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their young son, Archie, last year. During his chat with host James Corden, Harry confirmed that the way his family was treated by the tabloids was the main driver of his historic decision.

"We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health," he shared. "I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do."

Corden asked Harry if he still believes "walking away" from his official royal duties was the right thing to do after a year away from the palace, Harry made sure to let Corden and everybody watching know that "it was never walking away" from his family or his life of service. "It was stepping back rather than stepping down," he explained. "It was a really difficult environment, as I think a lot of people saw."

Harry also reassured Corden and those who may think he abandoned his duties that both he and Meghan remain committed to lives of public service, whether or not they're doing on behalf of his grandmother or not "I will never walk away, I will always be contributing," he said. "My life is public service so whenever I am in the world it's going to be the same thing."
