Hyundai Is Recalling 239,000 Cars Due To Exploding Seat Belt Parts

Hyundai is recalling 239,000 cars in the United States after three reported injuries were caused due to the seat belt pretensioners, which can explode and injure vehicle occupants.

According to ABC 7, the driver's and front passenger's seat belt pretensioners, which tighten the belts when in preparation for a crash, can explode upon deployment and send shrapnel throughout the vehicle. The recall includes 2019-2022 Accents, 2021-2023 Elantras, and 2021-2022 Elantra HEV's. Those who own any of the cars recalled can take their car to the dealership to get the seat belt pretensioners fixed at no cost. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said that Hyundai is expected to notify the owners by July 15th.

Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (reference recall number 229) or call the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to nhtsa.gov. For more information click here.
