Mattel Unveils 17 'Role Model' Barbies For National Women's Day

To honor National Women’s Day, Mattel unveiled a collection of 17 new Barbie dolls representing real women who serve as role models for girls.

The idea of the new dolls came after Mattel, the maker of Barbie, conducted a survey of 8,000 mothers around the globe and found that 86% are worried about the kind of role models their daughters are exposed to.

“Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind them that they can be anything, ” Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Barbie, said in a statement.

The women in the new group of dolls, called The Inspiring Women series, include Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim, artist Frida Kahlo, filmmaker Patty Jenkins, Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, Polish journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, NASA mathematician and physicist Katherine Johnson and aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.
