September 15th kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month. Major League Baseball kicks off the month by celebrating Robert Clemente. A Puerto Rican player whose dedication off the field made a larger impact than his Hall of Fame career on the field.
Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31st 1972. He was on a cargo plane departing San Juan, Puerto Rico. He along with others were attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Nicaragua after an earthquake impacted the Country.
Shortly after his death, Roberto Clemente became the 2nd player ever to have the mandatory five-year waiting period waived for his MLB Hall of Fame induction.
