California Becomes First State To Ban Pet Store Sales Of Puppy Mill Dogs

I'm am beyond excited about this news! I'm so proud of our state for leading the way and taking this huge step to protect animals! California just became the first state to make it illegal for store owners to sell cats, dogs, or rabbits unless the animal is from a shelter, that means no mill bred animals at all.  This is all because California Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill, AB 485, which passed the new law. Starting in 2019, stores would face $500 fines for each animal sold that isn’t from a shelter or rescue group.  It is known that puppy mills are awful.  The animals there are kept in small confined cages and mistreated.  Dogs born in puppy mills also often suffer with lifelong health problems. This law also gives animals in shelters a better chance at getting adopted instead of being euthanized.  There are so many animals in shelters waiting to be adopted.  When you buy a dog instead of adopting, healthy animals in shelters die. Please always choose adoption.
